# Segmentation: App usage

Segment users based on their interaction with your app or site

To create a segment based on a specific app usage condition, select **App usage** from the data categories dropdown list. Once you have added the relevant criteria outlined below, click **Save**. The data available is:

## Tag

Identify users based on their [tag hits](/documentation/docs/behavioural-data#tagging) on your app or site.

More info on tags can be found on the [Attributes & tags](/documentation/docs/attributes-tags) page.

Start by typing the tag name, then select it from the dropdown menu. Select the action you want to evaluate against this tag from the first drop list, then the time comparison from the next one and the time value corresponding to the period you want to evaluate and its time reference.

The example above shows a condition that applies to users who have hit a tag called 'view support page' at least once in the last 5 days.

## Tag with value

This is an extension of the tag segment above, with the addition of evaluating tag hits that include a specific value.

Start by typing the tag name, then select it from the dropdown menu. Next, select the operation and type the value of the tag.

The process is the same as the tag segment above. Select the action you want to test against this tag from the next drop list (for example, whether a tag *equals*); select the time comparison from the next then enter a corresponding time value in the next input field, and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

The example above shows a condition that applies to users who have hit a 'country' tag that equals Ireland at least once in the last 15 days.

## Event

Identify users based on their [real-time event](/documentation/docs/real-time-events) hits on your apps or sites and optionally add criteria against event properties.

Start by typing the event name, then select it from the dropdown menu. Select the action you want to evaluate against this event from the next dropdown menu (for example, whether the event has been *hit exactly*). Select the time comparison from the next input and then enter a corresponding time value in the next input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last dropdown menu.

To additionally segment based on event properties click the **Add property** button. New fields will be displayed where you can type the property name, the action that you want to evaluate and the criteria value.

> [!NOTE]
> When segmenting based on event properties, both conditions need to be true: the targeted audience needs to have hit the named event and also satisfy the event property conditions.
>
> For example, if you require an `order` event to be hit four times where the `item` is a T-shirt, it will not match for a user that has had four `order` events when only one of them is a T-shirt.

This example shows a condition that applies to users who hit the 'purchase' event at least once in the last 5 days. This event also needs to have a property within the event payload called 'amount' that is higher than 100.

> [!TIP]
> It is possible to segment based on several event properties. Properties can be added by clicking the Add property button.

> [!NOTE]
> Support for nested properties
>
> You can use nested properties in segmentation. To target a nested property, start with `$` and represent the nested structure by separating levels with dots. For example, if you want to use the `category`property nested within the `product` property, which itself is nested within the `details` property, your property should be formatted as `$.details.product.category`.

![This example shows a condition that applies to users who trigger the 'purchase' event with a product category of 'shoes' in event details.](https://cdn.document360.io/b056e88b-f6c1-4bd2-b5b8-08e9336a17c9/Images/Documentation/4fee79ae841b4b6efd95efb6435e9714e47130b7eb1a98c7b2dcd757ea8a4612-image(1).png)

This example shows a condition that applies to users who trigger the 'purchase' event with a product category of 'shoes' in event details.

## Event with value

This is an extension of the event segment above, with the addition of evaluating when your event contains a value.

Start by typing the event name, then select it from the dropdown menu. Select the action you want to evaluate against the event value from the next dropdown menu (for example, whether the event *contains* a specific value). Then, type the event value.

The process is the same as referenced in the event segment above. First select the action you want to evaluate against this event from the next drop list, select the time comparison from the next then enter a corresponding time value in the next input field, and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

The example above shows a condition that applies to users who have hit a 'order.complete' event that contains the keyword 'soaps' at least once in the last 5 days.

## Metric

Identify users based on the value from a [metric](/documentation/docs/metrics) they have hit from your connected apps or sites.

Start by typing the metric name, then select it from the dropdown menu.

Select the action you want to evaluate against the metric from the first drop list (such as its value being *less than* a specified amount), enter the amount, select the time comparison from the next then enter a corresponding time value in the next input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

The example above shows a condition that applies to users whose revenue is more than 10 in the last 8 hours.

## App opens

Identify users by the number of times they have opened your app in a specific timeframe.

Select the comparison you want to make against the number of app opens from the first drop list and the corresponding value; select the time comparison from the next drop list, then enter a corresponding time value in the following input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

![2214](https://cdn.document360.io/b056e88b-f6c1-4bd2-b5b8-08e9336a17c9/Images/Documentation/e1e74cb-Screenshot_2021-03-01_at_15.22.01(1).png)

The example above shows a condition that applies to users who had more than 3 app opens in the last 1 day.

## App downloaded

Identify users that have first opened your app in a specific timeframe.

Select the time comparison from the first drop list then enter a corresponding time value in the input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

![2212](https://cdn.document360.io/b056e88b-f6c1-4bd2-b5b8-08e9336a17c9/Images/Documentation/c4060fa-Screenshot_2021-03-01_at_15.22.17(1).png)

The example above shows a condition that applies to devices that have first opened the app in the last 15 days.

## App last opened

Identify users by the time they last opened your app.

Select the time comparison from the first drop list then enter a corresponding time value in the input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.

![2210](https://cdn.document360.io/b056e88b-f6c1-4bd2-b5b8-08e9336a17c9/Images/Documentation/deac948-Screenshot_2021-03-01_at_15.22.36(1).png)

The example above shows a condition that applies to users who opened the app in the last 5 days.

## Webpush opt-in

Identify users that have opted in for web push in a specific timeframe.

Select the time comparison from the first drop list then enter a corresponding time value in the input field and finally a qualifying time reference from the last drop list.
