Deleting Preferences or Channels

Learn about the permanent and irreversible impact of deleting consent preferences and channels.

You can manage your consent options by deleting a preference or a custom channel channel associated with that preference.

❗️

Deletion is Irreversible

Deleting a preference or a channel is a permanent action that cannot be undone. This action can break active campaigns, segments, and data imports that rely on that preference.

We strongly recommend testing this in a separate project before applying the change to your live environment.

Impact of Preference Deletion

When you delete a preference or custom channel, any part of the platform that relies on it will fail or return incorrect data. The scope of this impact depends on what you choose to delete.

  • When you delete a preference, for example Marketing, you are deleting the preference and all of its associated channels such as Marketing direct mail, Marketing post, and so on.
  • When you delete a custom channel from a preference, for example an post channel from Marketing, you are deleting only that specific combination. All other channels within that preference remain active. This action only breaks items that specifically rely on the deleted combination Marketing post.

Deleting either a preference or a channel with an associated preference will cause the following to fail:

  • Consent-based Triggers: Campaigns that are set to trigger automatically from a user's consent update will fail to run if the associated preference or preference-channel combination has been deleted.
For more information, see Trigger Campaigns on Consent Change.
  • User Segmentation: Any user segmentation created using the deleted preference or preference-channel combination will return a value of 0.
For more information, see Segment based on subscription preferences
  • In-App/On-site campaigns: Any in-app modal campaigns or onsite campaigns that use the deleted preference or preference-channel combination will no longer work.
For more information, see Manage Preferences using On-site Campaigns and iManage Preferences using In-app campaigns in Manage User Preferences.
  • Data Imports and Exports: Any file import, export, or API call configured to update user consent for the deleted preference or preference-channel combination will fail.
For more information, see Update Preferences using File Import and API in Manage User Preferences.
