Editing a Live Journey

There are two ways you can edit a live multi-stage journey:

Pause and Edit a Journey: Pause the live campaign first, make your changes directly, then resume it.
Edit without Pausing a Journey: Stage your changes in a draft while the live journey keeps running, then publish the draft when you are ready.
Editing a live journey without pausing it isn't available on every project. If you'd like this enabled, reach out to your account manager.

Pause and Edit a Journey

You can pause a journey and then edit it. This prevents users from trying to pass through a potentially incomplete journey or via actions which are not correctly set up. New users can continue to enroll in a paused workflow, but will remain at the start node until the campaign is unpaused.

To pause a campaign (and all workflows within it), navigate to Campaigns > Existing Campaigns > Live Campaigns, search for the campaign in the list and clicking the options menu on the row, select Edit.

With the campaign open it can be paused either by clicking the dedicated Pause button at the bottom of the page or by clicking to Edit Workflow on the Workflow tab.

Closed or stopped workflows cannot be edited.

Resume the workflow

Once changes have been made, assuming there are no errors, then all workflows can be resumed by clicking the Resume button at the top of the page.

At this point, all users waiting at delays or the start action will be moved on if the time they should have been moved on has passed.

It's probably always better to resume a workflow
It is possible to pause workflows and then save and close a campaign without resuming them. This would prevent any users stopped at delays and start actions from moving on and essentially leave them stuck in their journeys. It is worth being aware that doing this may cause users to receive out-of-date and so possibly irrelevant messaging when resuming workflows much later.

Edit without Pausing a Journey

Editing a live journey without pausing it isn't available on every project. If you'd like this enabled, reach out to your account manager.

You can edit a live journey without pausing it. With this approach, you create a draft and publish it when you're ready without pausing the journey. The live journey keeps running and nothing changes until you publish the draft.

To edit a live journey:

Go to the Content tab of a live campaign and click Create Draft Journey. If a draft already exists for this journey, the button reads Edit Draft Journey instead.
This opens the draft journey editor where you can edit your journey. Any changes you make here don't take effect until you publish the draft. To reference the live journey, click View live journey.
Any changes you make are highlighted in purple, as shown in the example image below:

The top-right of the draft journey editor shows who last saved the draft and the users who’re currently editing the workflow.
Review your changes and click Save.
You must save your changes as drafts are not saved automatically. Until you publish, your journey remains unaffected.
Click Publish when you’re ready to apply your changes to the live journey.
If you don't publish, the campaign stays as a draft and the live campaign's Content tab shows the message This campaign has an unpublished draft

Multiple Users working on the same draft
Only one draft can exist per journey at a time, but multiple users can edit the draft at once. If another user has made changes to the draft since you started, clicking Save will prompt you to either:
Save your changes and discard theirs, or
Discard your changes and keep theirs
If another user publishes the draft while you are working on the draft, any unsaved changes of yours will be overridden and not saved.

Copying Workflows between Variants
If you're using variants, and you publish changes to one variant then use Copy From to copy the workflow to another variant, you don't need to publish again for that variant to go live

View version history

Every time you publish a draft, Journey Builder saves a snapshot of the journey. Version history lists these snapshots so you can see what changed, when, and who published it.

You can open version history from either of the following:

Viewing the live journey
- Click the history icon next to the analytics and info icons, above the journey preview.
Editing the draft
- Open the 3-dot menu at the top right of the draft editor and select Version history.

Click Exit version history, shown in the same place you opened it from, to return to the normal view.

The list shows each published version with its:

Version number, labelled Version 1, Version 2, and so on
Published by: an icon or avatar plus the name of the user who published it
Publish timestamp, for example Published: 21 Jul, 11:54

Versions are listed newest first. The most recent version carries a Live badge next to its version number.

Selecting a version loads its journey onto the canvas, so you can see the full configuration as it was at that point, including individual node settings. You cannot edit or restore a past version from here.

If you have unsaved changes in the draft editor and select Version history, a popup asks you to save or discard them first.

Before you publish your first draft
Version history only appears once a journey has been published at least once. Until then, the 3-dot menu shows Help but not Version history.
